Silver Medal Award

The American Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

Herzog Receives 2006 Silver Medal Award

Each year, Ad Fed awards the Silver Medal to an incredible trailblazer in our market. The Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising. The honor celebrates those who are active in furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

At the annual meeting in June, the 2006 honor went to Earl Herzog of Campbell Mithun (CM).

My Name is Earl

In his 35 years of service at CM, Earl is only the third Media Director in the 73-year history of Minnesota's largest advertising agency. He has served in this capacity since 1980, and as an Executive V.P. of CM since 1985. During his tenure, the agency grew from about $100 million in billings to more than $1 billion.

Earl leads CM's Contact Management Group and manages a staff of almost 100. Several of his most senior team members have been with the agency for 20-plus years — a testament to his leadership, training and the devotion he inspires in his staff. Earl has also served as a member of the agency's operating committee, while pioneering new media planning and buying.

His continued development and oversight of Cash Plus, Inc. has not only provided a buying source that has saved clients millions of dollars in its 25-year existence, but also has provided the agency with a strong and growing revenue source, as well as a key differentiating service to offer its clients.

Advancements in Advertising

Earl was president of the Ad Fed from 1985 to 1986. He is an adjunct professor at the U of M's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In addition, he was chairman of the BPA (Business Press Association), a member of the AAAA Media Policy Committee, and on the Board of Trustees for Minnesota Public Television.

And talk about large contributions to the general advancement of advertising — consider this: People Earl hired, trained and mentored have gone on to senior-level leadership positions at some of America's largest corporations. In fact, the media directors at almost a dozen metro-area agencies started their careers under Earl's tutelage.

Standing O!

On behalf of Ad Fed, congratulations, Earl! And thank you!

Paul Foss Award

The Paul Foss Award, first awarded in 1981, recognizes a member of the Advertising Federation of Minnesota who has made outstanding contributions to the organization. Past recipients have served on committees, board of directors, volunteered countless hours at events and more.

LuAnn Yattaw Receives the 2006 Paul Foss Award

LuAnn Yattaw, past president of Ad Fed, received the 2006 Paul Foss Award at Ad Fed's annual meeting in June. First presented in 1981, the award recognizes a member of the Advertising Federation of Minnesota who has made outstanding contributions to the organization. Past recipients have served on committees and boards of directors, volunteered countless hours at events, and much more.

What Has She Done? (What Hasn’t She Done?!)

LuAnn gave a major portion of her time and energy to ensure that Ad Fed is alive and relevant for the Twin Cities. During LuAnn's term as president, Ad Fed underwent a research project with the help of the U of M's Carlson School of Management to review and re-brand our local club. Through this endeavor, Ad Fed unveiled a new brand identity, reviewed all of our offerings and launched an Ad 2 club that is now a year old and 180 members strong — one of the largest clubs in the nation!

LuAnn also served on the Holiday Party committee and chaired Golferoo. Rumor has it that she not only brings her expertise to all these committees, she also brings the food! A fellow Ad Fed member commented, "She is one of the most selfless, ambitious, organized and dedicated individuals I've ever met. She makes committee work fun and draws you in with her sense of humor."

100 Years...Thanks for (Collecting) the Memories

If all that wasn't enough, LuAnn teamed with Ben Wallace and Jean Shore to organize Ad Fed's 100-year celebration. Not only can the gal throw one heck of a party (no surprise), but she put in countless hours researching, gathering photos and interviewing industry leaders to keep the memories alive — just go to adfed100.org to see a glimpse of Ad Fed's century-long journey.

Resting on Her Laurels?

So does this mean LuAnn can retire from Ad Fed duties? No chance! She continues her service on the District 8 AAF board, and she's a part of the team that puts this publication together. Thanks to LuAnn for reassessing Ad Fed's needs, helping our club grow, and making certain that our history is preserved and celebrated!
